The Days Are Long, But the Years Are Short

The days are long, but the years are short.

It’s often said of parenthood, “The days are long, but the years are short.”

I snapped this picture of our girls’ big wheel parked out in the yard — ready and waiting for a new day — early one morning last week, and I couldn’t help but think about that quote.

When the baby-turned-toddler still isn’t sleeping through the night and the pre-schooler throws temper tantrums and the big girls argue when you say the sky is blue, parenting is exhausting and we often hold our breath waiting for bedtime and the end of another day.

But when we look back and our firstborn is about to turn 8 and our baby-turned-toddler is really almost 3, it seems like it’s gone by in the blink of an eye.

Nester reminds us every summer that we only have 18 summers with each of them, and sometimes I think we need that perspective to get us through the hard days without wishing them away.

Because in another blink of the eye, we will be looking back on all 18 of them and wondering where they went.

I completely agree.  Mine are only 4 and 22 months, but it seems like the past 4 years have flown by.  I know that some days I am not on point with regards to my attitude.  Cleaning up one more potty accident, or food being flung across the room always makes me stop.  But, I need to remember that these days will be gone before I know it.  And while the food throwing will be gone, also will the days of “mama can you please read me another book? and mama, can you please cuddle with me?” will also be gone…

I never truly understood the saying until I became a parent. We had so many endless nights when my daughter was a baby, and then suddenly, they were over. Realizing how short the years are helps remind me that I need to cherish the days we have because they will be only a memory sooner rather than later.

Thank you for this reminder… This will be my new mantra when it comes to relationships (with my husband, family, friends)… :)

This quote always brings tears to my eyes… I’m the single mom of a teenage girl and I realise that I’ve been far from being a very good mom when she was a kid, I was feeling so much culprit and sadness about not having been able to give her a real family that I often forgot WE were a family… and we could have done so many more things together…
Now it’s too late… May my wonderful princess forgive me one day…

Estelle, you sound like a wonderful, caring mom to me, and I am sure she loves you for who you are! We can’t change yesterday, only right now today!

Thank you, Mandi!  After a day of teachable moments, this is a great reminder!  We put away the big wheel years ago.  Have a wonderful day!
